Practical Information

Pre-trip information

You will find detailed pre-trip information in a pdf publication on the Hofsá and the Selá pages on this website. Information such as:

  • International and domestic travel

  • River information, beats and rotation

  • Recommended tackle and flies

  • Catch and release rules

  • Fishing methods

  • Clothing list

Tackle disinfection

Before travelling to Iceland every angler travelling with his own gear needs to have his equipment sterilised before entering the country.

This must be done by a certified vet that must provide you with a signed inventory list of what has been sterilised. This list must then be shown upon arrival in Keflavik. Main equipment that must be sterilised:

  • Rods

  • Reels

  • Flies

  • Lines

  • Waders

  • Wading boots

Professional guide

We recommend that you hire a professional guide to maximise your fly fishing experience. Strengur Angling Club has a team of great guides.

Tackle and flies

You can fish most of the pools on our rivers with a 7 or 8 weight single handed rod, 9 1/2 to 10 ft. We do however strongly recommend that you bring a 7, 8 or 9 weight double handed rod as well.

You should come prepared on your trip and we suggest you shop flies in Iceland for a good fly selection for your trip. Further information on flies can be found in our pre-trip documents on the Hofsá and Selá pages.

fly lines

Under almost all conditions we fish with floating lines on our rivers. For extreme conditions you should however bring a sinking line or a sinking tip to use if needed.
